Is Air Pollution Silently Damaging Your Skin?

We all have some knowledge about air pollution nowadays. Thanks to newspapers and the internet, it’s no secret that there is fierce competition between Dhaka and Delhi over which city will top the pollution charts. However, what often remains unknown to us is how this air pollution is affecting our health. No, I’m not talking about asthma or breathing difficulties. I’m talking about the largest organ of our body, the skin! Is air pollution silently damaging our skin?

Our skin is the largest organ of our body. So today, let’s learn how this regular phenomenon of urban life, air pollution, is impacting this organ!

What are Air Pollutants?

Before understanding the effects of air pollution, we need to know what constitutes this pollution. Air pollutants are primarily a complex mixture of airborne particles and various gases. Let’s briefly go through them:

  • Particulate Matter (2.5-10)
  • Ground-Level Ozone Gas
  • Volatile Organic Compounds
  • Heavy Metals
  • Ultraviolet Rays
  • Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons
  • Oxides
  • Cigarette Smoke

When the skin is exposed to these substances for extended periods, it naturally encounters various problems. As the outermost layer of our body, the skin acts as a barrier protecting us from the environment. However, air pollution disrupts this function.

Oxidative Stress and Skin Damage

Air pollutants create oxidative stress, which damages our skin. Air pollution produces free radicals, which emit radiation even in small amounts, creating oxidative stress on the skin. This stress breaks down the structure of collagen and elastin fibers, which are crucial for maintaining skin elasticity. Consequently, this leads to fine lines and sagging skin. In short, the skin starts to age prematurely.

Increasing Skin Inflammation

We take numerous measures to prevent inflammation caused by chemical products on our skin, don’t we? Yet, we may never have imagined that air pollution could increase our skin’s inflammation. But it’s true! Remember the particulate matter 2.5 and volatile organic compounds we mentioned earlier? These two substances heavily trigger inflammation. Redness, itching, and swelling are common symptoms of this inflammation. Additionally, if you have skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis, these pollutants can rapidly worsen your skin’s condition.

Dehydrating the Skin

It may sound surprising, but air pollution damages the skin’s natural barrier, causing it to lose more water than usual. What happens as a result?

  • The skin microbiome or good bacteria are lost or killed.
  • The skin barrier is severely damaged.
  • Premature aging signs appear.
  • In many cases, it can lead to skin cancer.
  • The skin becomes very dry and may crack.
  • The skin becomes highly sensitive.

Increasing the Risk of Skin Cancer

Surprised? Air pollution leading to skin cancer! Why not? Although it’s not very common, the free radicals present in air pollutants can alter our DNA structure, damaging skin cells and potentially leading to skin cancer. This risk is higher for those who spend a lot of time outdoors, especially in polluted areas. Therefore, it is crucial to minimize exposure to open areas, particularly polluted ones.

Air pollution can now be considered a part of our lives. If the surrounding environment is polluted and we spend a lot of time there, even the best skincare products might not be very effective. Understanding that air pollution is silently damaging our skin and taking appropriate measures can significantly reduce the damage. Try to spend less time in highly polluted areas and avoid directly exposing your skin to these environments. Doing so might yield some positive results!
